To think that you would not be
That special one to complete me.
I don't understand the reason why
It must be so; a closer friendship
You deny.

I remember when you made me smile.
Every time I saw you, I paused; and while
You passed I noticed that you smiled, too.
So much in common; so much that I presumed
To be true.

I thought that we soon could, in time,
Become much more; the desire to climb
That up-ward path is so etched in my mind.
But the way to eternal love, I realized, I truly
Could not find.

Yet all is not lost, for the joy I knew
Through every minute, every second with you
Remains. I do not regret the great pleasure
That I still hold in my memory: a dream,
Without measure.
